For the ambitious program of Digital India, BharatNet works as every backbone. BharatNet has been created to provide Broadband connectivity to 2.5 Lakh Gram Panchayats in the country using optical fiber. The entire project is funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) which was set up for improving telecom services in rural and remote areas of the country. The objective is to facilitate the delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to rural India. As an enabler, BharatNet will make it possible to take the Internet and Telecommunication services to every nook and corner of the country.
The project is a Centre-State collaborative project, with the States contributing free Rights of Way for establishing the Optical Fibre Network.
